Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is supported by high-quality research.
  • improves children’s school performance
  • helps children make requests appropriately
  • helps children give and share information
  • reduces children’s aggression towards themselves and others
  • reduces self-stimulatory behaviour
  • reduces tantrums and disruptive behaviour.
As with all types of behaviour interventions, how well the intervention works is influenced by whether it’s consistently and accurately put into practice.

Why We Use a Positive Behaviour Support Approach
Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is an evidence-informed, person-centred approach that seeks to understand behaviour in context, improve quality of life, and build meaningful, lasting change.
Rather than focusing only on the behaviour itself, PBS considers the person’s needs, communication, environment, relationships and daily experiences. This helps identify why behaviours of concern may be occurring and what supports are needed to create safer, more positive outcomes.

A PBS approach:
  • Promotes human rights, dignity, inclusion and participation
  • Focuses on improving quality of life, not simply reducing behaviour
  • Uses assessment and consultation to understand the function and context of behaviour
  • Brings together the important people in a person’s life, including family, carers, educators and support teams
  • Develops an individualised Behaviour Support Plan with practical, proactive strategies
  • Builds skills such as communication, emotional regulation, independence and daily living skills
  • Supports consistent implementation across home, school, community and care settings
  • Works towards the reduction and elimination of restrictive practices where these are present

At Positive Behaviour Support WA, we believe meaningful change happens when supports are collaborative, respectful, practical and tailored to the individual.
